The world has become more VUCA than ever. The overall pace, volume and complexity of needed innovation is paralyzing many of our managers. On top of the technology push and public demand we have to deal with the C-19 crisis. However, for transformation purposes this might be a blessing in disguise. Forced to find new ways of working together we see an acceleration of innovations taking place. On the other hand we need all our time, means and effort to overcome this situation. What’s new? Public management always has to deal with unique kinds of paradoxes. So, this is what we’re good in, right?

Todays’ ambidextrous challenge for the public manager requires a thought after innovation management system. One that will support the adaption for new solutions and seamlessly implement innovations in the organization. We’re all looking for that holy grail. The naked truth is: there is no formula. Best practices, models and schemes are all useful for inspiration but doesn’t help in a specific way high-level management in transforming their old school organization into an adaptive new one. The only formula moving forwards is to roll up your sleeves and create your own innovation management system. This requires an open culture, full commitment of the management, a comprehensive portfolio of projects, and a long-term vision of our political and government leaders.

In this presentation the moderators will zoom in on how to start this process building your own models. It all starts with a maturity scan telling you at what level your organization operates in the field of innovation. This will help you setting up a plan supported by your own well-trained managers or senior advisors. The Dutch Government has developed such a scan recently and is launching customer of a training program to conduct different kinds of assessments, and more over implement needed solutions resulting from that.

This validated training-program is developed over the years by the Total Innovation Management Foundation and now made fit for use for governments and not-for-profit organizations. The innovation maturity scan is already in use in The Netherlands in Dutch and will be officially launched worldwide with an international version at the OECD conference. The innovation maturity model comprises of two components: one to conduct a self-scan, and one other component what we call an in-depth assessment. The self-scan tool will be made available by the TIM Foundation free of charge and can be used online by everyone interested. The in-depth assessment is only available via certified professionals.

This is supported by a community of innovators within the Dutch Government. The presentation will be concluded with some insight on how this community operates and can support the adaptiveness of your organization.
